He starts with a drum solo. Next, he explains and demonstrates various drums, cymbals, "gadgets" and rudiments.
He then offers quick portraits of several drummers of the first half of the 20th century (with musical examples, of course), including Baby
Dodds, "Josh", Alvin Burroughs, A.G. Godley, Gene Krupa, Big Sid Catlett, Walter Johnson, Sonny Greer, Billy Gladstone, Manzie Campbell,
Chick Webb, and Baby Lovett.
Papa Jo then takes to the floor to demonstrate the influence of a few tap dancers (Pete the Tapper, Eddie Rector, Baby Lawrence, Bill
"Bojangles" Robinson). After returning to the drumset to illustrate some ideas for playing a band arrangement, Jones plays another solo and
then performs "Sweet Sue" with Willie "The Lion" Smith.
